Recently I have been stressed about tuition and whatnot, as I'm sure a lot of us are. But I found this, and its made me a lot more appreciative of what little financial aid I do get. At least our government isn't about to cut $12.7 billion from the education budget, right? With this cut, Spanish "universities will be allowed to raise fees by as much as 66 percent ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )" at a time when no one can afford tuition anyways because no one can get a job.
Normally I don't like to mention anything that could be seen as political but I thought this was worth a share, mostly because I have some friends taking part in protests like the one in the video I found bellow.
This happened in Madrid... Crazy, crazy stuff. Its brutal and pretty violent. Just giving you a heads up.

Thats actually not as true as you (or I) would think. A friend of mine is paying 15,000 € for school. USD, thats about 20k and with a 60% bump, you're getting up to the low/mid 30k USD mark. Thats not far off of (or more than) what some schools here cost. Now, obviously even with the budget cut schools might not raise tuition a full 66%, but thats getting up to US prices.
Full disclosure, I don't know what the "around 15,000 €" includes, so if he's including a place to live, books, and whatever else than thats a slightly different story.

"Access to education and health is among the basic rights of citizens and as such should be untouchable, whatever the state of the economy,"
Policia : "Now that right there is some optimism. I'm gonna go ahead and bonk you with this club, and maybe while you're getting your access to health, you can think about the access to education I've just provided."

That is very interesting. Taxes are (generally) higher in Western Europe. But people generally got much cheaper college tuitions and free healthcare. If taxes remain the same but education goes up then that's a real bummer for the citizens.
I know how they feel already. I live in CA. The insanely high state income tax here makes my total tax burden similar to that in some Western European countries. But I don't have free health care and college will be insanely expensive by the time I have kids and they are old enough to go to college.

There was a good amount of bonking going on from both sides.
Police: I'm gonna bonk you with this baton.
Student: Okay. I'm gonna throw this rock at your head.
Healthcare for all!

Spain? Right wing? What gave them away, government being half the economy, or the inevitable riots when "progressive", cradle-to-grave dependency didn't work out again?

Apparently the government might make some serious healthcare cuts too. I haven't read anything about that though, so I can't really give an opinion on that aspect of it. But yeah, compared to places like France, the cost of tuition in Spain is next to nothing. I think I read somewhere that the average cost in Paris, with room/board and books was something around 60-65,000 €. Thats absolutely nuts (if I'm remembering that correctly) when compared to the school my friend is going to in Madrid. I'm transferring to either NYU (if I get it... still waiting to hear back) or Fordham next year and I am seriously not looking forward to the costs, and NY's income tax definitely isn't as bad as it is in CA.
